Gout
What is Gout?
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is increasing in prevalence in Australia1. It mainly affects the joints in the feet, particularly the big toe but can occur in other joints such as the ankles, knees, hands, and wrists.
Gout is mainly caused by an accumulation of urate crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues. These crystals form when there are high levels of uric acid in the blood.2
Gout is often misunderstood and not well treated1.
